The 2026 Willie McCovey Memorial Community Prospect List cruises forward, as we continue in our quest to communally rank the top 44 prospects in the San Francisco Giants organization. And the latest chapter brings us a name that I don’t have a lot to write about, other than to say this: I can’t wait to watch him play.
In a very narrow election, shortstop Luis Hernandez was voted as the No. 6 prospect in the Giants system in his CPL debut. Hernandez is nearly unanimously viewed as the top prospect in the upcoming
international signing period, and has been linked to the Giants for years, with an agreement in place that predates last year’s CPL. A right-handed hitter from Venezuela who turns 17 next month, Hernandez is, at this stage in his career (admittedly a big disclaimer), a true five-tool player. He has tremendous contact skills, outrageous bat speed, fantastic defensive chops, and is a menace on the basepaths.
There’s star potential, and no one would be surprised if he has a 2026 that marvels the 2025 that Josuar González had … or perhaps even exceeds it. But that’s putting the cart well ahead of the horse, and there’s always a lot of risk with teenage players who have yet to make their debut. He could be the next González, or he could be the next Ryan Reckley. We’ll just hav to wait and see.
Now let’s add to the list!
