While all the attention at the moment is directed toward Jürgen Klopp’s nominations for the German senior squad, there are a lot of intriguing stories when looking at the German U-21 squad. With some key fixtures against Belgium and Croatia ahead, there are true tests for what Antonio Di Salvo’s squad can achieve.
While the midfield is a bit of a weaker point compared to the attack and defense, that doesn’t indicate any problems with talented German midfielders. It is perhaps a greater indication
that the likes of Tom Bischof, Lennart Karl, and others are already playing with the senior squad.
Several of these players are arguably already on the level of the senior squad, including Mio Backhaus, Nicolò Tresoldi, Hennes Behrens, Nnamdi Collins, and Paris Brunner. Don’t be surprised if this is the last time we see these players as part of the U-21 squad, as they could become mainstays in the senior team at any time.
Until then, Germany has perhaps one of the strongest — if not the strongest — U-21 national sides in the sport at the moment.
