It took nearly seven extra minutes past the expected run time for the first two games of Big East play for Marquette men’s lacrosse to wrap up their 2-0 start, but the end result is that the Golden Eagles have put themselves into a prime position heading into the final three games of the regular season.
Two games in, Jake Richard has his guys at 2-0 in the conference, which is a tie for first place with Georgetown and Villanova, who just happen to be two of the three teams that MU will play down the stretch.
Yes, that means that the other three teams in the league — Denver, Providence, and St. John’s — have all started out 0-2, and that’s helpful for Marquette as well. The worst MU can finish now is 2-3 and the best that any of those three can finish is 3-2, and the Golden Eagles hold a tiebreaker over both Providence and St. John’s when it comes to figuring out the fourth and final team in the conference tournament if it comes to that.
This means that over the next two weeks, Marquette is going to get a chance to lock in their Big East tournament berth before potentially going into a showdown with Denver in the final game of the season. You’d much rather be in that position with three weeks to go than where MU ended up last year: Providence pulling a stunner on Denver in the second to last week of the season to give the Golden Eagles a chance to beat the Pioneers and take the fourth spot in the field.
If Marquette can pay off how they’ve looked at times against ranked opponents this season or if they can use the valuable lessons of fighting through overtime the last two games and find a way to beat Georgetown or Villanova…. well, that’s a big accomplishment for Richard and his guys. One game at a time, let’s see what they have in their bag this time around….

Marquette is 5-11 all time against Georgetown. Believe it or not, this series used to be heavily tilted towards the Golden Eagles. After losing the first ever meeting in the first ever season of existence in 2013, MU won five of the next seven meetings, including four straight from 2017 through 2019, with the Hoyas coming in as a ranked team against an unranked Marquette at the time. Since then: All Hoyas. Eight straight Georgetown victories including both last year’s double overtime contest in the regular season and the 19-8 final in the Big East tournament a month later.
As we noted in our conference play preview whip-around, part of the reason that Georgetown has four losses on the season is because they went out and challenged themselves in non-conference play. The only one of those losses that got lopsided on them before the very end was the game at then-#8 Syracuse, where it was 12-4 late in the first half and 15-6 midway through the third. Georgetown still got that back to 17-12 midway through the fourth, although you might be able to argue that the Orange were just trying to coast their way through the rest of it….. and also that’s as close as the Hoyas got.
In any case, that streak of losses was snapped in their Big East opener when Georgetown went out to the mountains and dismantled then-#13 Denver, 17-5. That game was 11-4 at the half, and that was in the middle of a 10-0 run that stretched from 8:37 of the second quarter until less than two minutes left in regulation. Yep, Denver went nearly the entire second half without a goal, only throwing one last one in with 1:13 to go. We can have a conversation about whether or not Denver should have been ranked at the time — if you read the whip-around, you know — but that was quite the statement of Who Is In Charge In This Conference This Year from Georgetown. They reinforced it with a 15-8 win over Providence last weekend, also on the road, and once again, the Hoyas opened up the throttle as the game went along, going from tied 2-2 at the end of the first quarter to up 11-4 heading into the final frame.
The record is masking Georgetown’s actual abilities on the field, as Lacrosse Reference puts them ninth in the country in overall efficiency. They’re also #9 on offense, and that’s because the transfer pair of Rory and Liam Connor are dragging the Hoyas all over the field. Rory, the elder Connor, is the points and goals leader on the squad as well in the Big East. He has 34 goals and has yet to have a game this season when he’s been held to either zero or one goal. Liam is the younger brother, and for his junior year, he’s leading the Hoyas in assists with 30, and only Rory has hit double digits in that department to rank second behind his brother. Rory and Liam Connor have 44 and 43 points on the season respectively and no one else on the roster has more than the 17 that Jack Schubert has put up. This results in what LaxRef says is the ninth most efficient offense in the country…. but it does leave the Hoyas awfully one dimensional. If Marquette can find a way to pester Rory into poor shooting lanes and stop Liam from finding cutters…. well, can they keep it close enough to punch through?
On the other end of the field, Anderson Moore is in charge of the net. He’s allowing 10.55 goals per 60 minutes of action and stopping 54% of shots on frame. That ratio has been jumping up in conference play as Moore has made 23 saves and allowed just 12 goals. That’s over 65%, and if he can keep that up against Marquette’s offense, it’s going to be a long afternoon in the nation’s capital.
