Barcelona made it official on Wednesday that goalkeeper Iñaki Peña has signed a contract extension until 2029 and joined La Liga side Elche on a season-long loan deal.
Here’s the club’s official statement:
Agreement reached between FC Barcelona and first team player Iñaki Peña to extend his contract to 30 June 2029.
Agreement also reached between FC Barcelona and Elche Club de Fútbol for the keeper to go on loan for this season up to 30 June 2026.
Peña’s extension and departure will create the necessary salary cap space to register the two-year contract renewal of Wojciech Szczesny with La Liga, finally allowing the Polish goalkeeper to make the squad ahead of Sunday’s La Liga match against Rayo Vallecano.
This is Peña’s second time being sent out on loan by Barça after joining Galatasary for six months back in 2022, and now he gets a big opportunity to start for an Elche team that will be counting on his saves to try and survive the top flight as a newly-promoted side.
Good luck at Elche, Iñaki Peña!
