Former Liverpool FC goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher will face former teammate Dominik Szoboszlai as Ireland hosts Hungary in their World Cup Qualifying Group F opener.
Fresh off seeing Dominik’s game-winning free kick against Arsenal over the weekend, Kelleher spoke about the prospect of trying to keep one of those long-ranger howitzers from hitting the back of the net:
“Obviously, I think he’s been a great player.”
“I think it was probably a nearly perfect free-kick. The way he strikes the ball, he puts
a lot of different movement on the football.”
“Maybe you don’t see it to the naked eye, but certainly as a goalkeeper you can see it. I know him quite well from Liverpool and one of his biggest threats is his shooting ability so for sure I think we need to limit that on Saturday. He’s a really good guy, a good player and one we need to be aware of.”
Kelleher also spoke about dealing with the loss of Diogo Jota:
“It’s not been the easiest of times for me personally.”
“Obviously, for the lads at Liverpool as well, it’s going to be difficult but it’s been a tough time for myself.”
“He’s obviously a big miss and the loss of a huge friend so it’s been difficult, as you can imagine.”
Amidst all the excitement of the new season, new signings, there have been reminders that members of the extended Liverpool FC family are still working through tremendous grief. Let’s keep showing up, singing his song and keep supporting our boys through what will be a long and difficult season.
