Three weeks before he was set to meet his old team on Monday Night Football, Brian Daboll was fired as head coach of the New York Giants. The former New England Patriots assistant, who had been with the team since
2022, was let go after a 2-8 start and 20-40-1 overall record during his tenure with the organization.
“We spoke this morning about the direction of our franchise on the field, and we have decided that, at this time, it is in our best interest to make a change at the head coaching position,” team owners John Mara and Steve Tisch said in a joint statement.
“The past few seasons have been nothing short of disappointing, and we have not met our expectations for this franchise. We understand the frustrations of our fans, and we will work to deliver a significantly improved product.”
Before joining the Giants, Daboll spent time with multiple NFL teams. He got his start with the Patriots in 2000, joining Bill Belichick’s staff as a defensive assistant and later a wide receivers coach. He left the organization in 2007 and went on to serve as quarterbacks coach for the Jets as well as offensive coordinator in Cleveland, Miami and Kansas City.
Daboll returned to New England to work with the team’s tight ends from 2013 to 2016, increasing his Super Bowl ring collection to five, before a stint as offensive coordinator at Alabama and with the Buffalo Bills. His success in the latter role — he helped develop Josh Allen into one of the best QBs in the league and was named Assistant Coach of the Year in 2020 — paved the way for him to join the Giants in 2022.
He led the team to a 9-7-1 record and playoff berth in his first season and was named NFL Coach of the Year, but failed to duplicate that success. Daboll’s Giants went 6-11 and 3-14 before this year’s 2-8 start sealed his fate.
Now led by interim head coach/offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, the Giants are scheduled to visit Gillette Stadium on Monday, Dec. 1, for an 8:15 p.m. ET kickoff.
