TCU baseball stumbled to the finish line over the weekend, dropping a three-game series against West Virginia and concluding the regular season with a 33-20 overall record. The Horned Frogs, who finished seventh in the Big 12 standings and will be the No. 7 seed for the conference tournament, will face either Utah or Kansas State in the second round on Wednesday. TCU finished with a 17-13 mark over 30 Big 12 games this season.
Thursday: WVU 2, TCU 0
Tommy LaPour turned in a quality start despite the
loss, throwing five innings and striking out five while walking two and holding the Mountaineers to two runs on three hits. TCU managed seven hits in the game, but the team left seven runners on base and struck out eight times. Chase Brunson, Jack Bell and Preston Gamster each had two hits for the Horned Frogs, who received three shutout innings of relief from right-hander Walter Quinn.
Friday: TCU 4, WVU 0
Lance Davis continued his hot streak on the mound, firing his second consecutive complete-game shutout and improving to 5-3 on the season. Davis limited WVU to three hits and struck out six while walking only one one 108 pitches. Preston Gamster, Kyuss Gargett and Noah Franco each launched solo home runs for the Horned Frogs, who added a run on a wild pitch in the eighth inning. TCU overcame 14 strikeouts to earn the victory.
Saturday: WVU 6, TCU 4
The Horned Frogs held a one-run lead going into the eighth inning, where the Mountaineers rallied for three runs to surge ahead and seal the series. Nolan Traeger’s RBI double and Kyuss Gargett’s two-run homer in the third gave TCU a 3-0 lead after three innings. WVU tied the score after four innings, but the Horned Frogs retook the lead on Noah Franco’s RBI single in the sixth. TCU had eight hits, but struck out nine times and left seven on base. Colton Griffin and Cole Cramer each collected two hits to lead the Horned Frogs at the plate.
Zack James started but didn’t make it out of the third inning, conceding two runs on six hits. Tanner Sagouspe took the loss in relief, allowing three runs on three walks and one hit in the eighth inning.
