Lothar Matthäus has come out strongly in defense of Michael Olise, firmly rejecting suggestions that Bayern Munich should fine the 24-year-old French winger following his sending-off during Champions League action against Viking FK.
While acknowledging that Olise’s red card in Norway proved costly in the 3-3 draw, the Bayern legend argued that missing the upcoming European fixture against Arsenal is punishment enough for a player driven purely by playing the game.
“Why would I think about fining Olise
[following his red card], as it has been suggested? His biggest punishment is that he won’t be allowed to play against Arsenal. He wants to play football. He doesn’t want to talk to you, he doesn’t want to talk to me. He wants to be left in peace. He doesn’t want to wear Lederhosen; he wants to wear his cap. Let him be who he is, and we’ll have a lot of fun,” said the pundit, as captured by @iMiaSanMia.
Matthäus also offered his two cents on Olise’s contract situation amidst rumors that top clubs like Real Madrid are quite interested in signing the Frenchman.
“If I were FC Bayern, I would try to extend Olise’s contract by another two or three years. Even if he doesn’t see out the contract, at least I would secure a high transfer fee, because the longer the contract runs, the higher the fee I can command. That’s why I think offering him a new contract with an extra €10 million wouldn’t be a bad deal for Bayern, and Olise would be happy,” Matthäus said.
He used the opportunity to take a jab at Manuel Neuer too, following recent criticism of the goalkeeper’s contract and demands. Matthäus stated that if Neuer does not extend his contract—which is extremely expensive for the club—and retires instead, Bayern would save enough money to cover the amount he suggested for Olise. He added that Bayern wouldn’t even need to sign a new goalkeeper because they already have one.
