With the news that college football coaches are seeking to eliminate conference championship games, it’s a good time to look back fondly at some of the greatest ACC Championship Game memories.
If you remember the ACC initially set up their two divisions (Atlantic and Coastal) so that Florida State and Miami could meet in Jacksonville, Florida to decide a champion. Sounded like a great plan until FSU made the first title game and then the league got Virginia Tech vs BC in 2007 and social media had
their fun with this great crowd shot.
To no one’s surprise the Gator Bowl bowed out of hosting following this game. Still the ACC was undaunted and surely Miami’s proud program would bounce back as the game moved to Tampa….
Except it didn’t, and the Atlantic Division went on a run winning every title from 2011-2019. Ok, actually it was Clemson and Florida State who went on that run, but even though they didn’t win, we got the term “Coastal Chaos” out of this time period as six different schools represented the Coastal in the title game.
Yes, finally Miami got in and in 2017 set a record for fewest points scored with a pathetic field goal to avoid a shutout.
This season might be the last time for Syracuse, NC State, Cal and Stanford to try and tie Notre Dame for most ACCCG appearances. Maybe this is the year Miami ties Duke and Wake Forest for ACC titles?
It’s unfortunate that football fans in Charlotte won’t get to see meaningful football games in December, but we’ll always have the Kenny Pickett Fake Slide memories
What were your favorite ACC Championship Game memories?
