Barcelona have reportedly made Alessandro Bastoni one of their top transfer targets
ahead of the summer window as they look to bolster their backline. There’s been talk that Inter would consider selling Bastoni this summer, giving Barcelona hope they can land the Italy international.
But what about Bastoni? According to a new report in Italy, there’s only one reason why Bastoni would leave the Nerazzurri and that’s if he were to continue being booed in stadiums across Italy.
Bastoni has been in the
spotlight recently in Serie A and been targeted by the boo-boys for his role in a controversial red card for Pierre Kalulu’s during the Derby d’Italia. The defender also celebrated the sending off and subsequently issued an apology for his actions.
“I wanted to give my version of what happened on Saturday night, because I feel it’s right to explain how I saw the incident,” he said at a press conference. “I exaggerated the fall once I felt contact with Kalulu to try and win a foul, but I have to apologise for my reaction afterwards as it wasn’t nice to see, even if it was very human.
“I was caught up in the heat and intensity of such an important match. I’m sorry it went that way. I think it’s right to take responsibility, but my character and my career shouldn’t be questioned.
“I’ve played more than 300 professional matches. I didn’t expect so much noise around it — I’ve seen a lot of hypocrisy and heard people say things that just don’t make sense. I thank those who commented fairly, saying I made a mistake without condemning my character.”
Bastoni has since revealed he has received death threats and has continued to be barracked by fans during games in the Italian top flight.
The thinking currently is that Bastoni’s priority is Inter but that he could be pushed into a change of scenery if the hostility from fans continues.
The defender is now on international duty and will play in a World Cup play-off against Northern Ireland tomorrow night in front of Italian fans in Bergamo.
