The New Orleans Saints made a set of roster moves today, announcing that they have released kicker Daniel Carlson and claimed running back Audric Estime off waivers.
Estime is a much-needed addition to a running game that has been virtually nonexistent this season. Coming off their bye week, the Saints are looking to reinvigorate an offense that has struggled to find consistency, and that has to start with establishing the running game, which currently ranks among the worst in the NFL.
The running
back returns to New Orleans after averaging 4.3 yards per carry last season. Currently, CJ Donaldson leads the Saints with 4.8 yards per carry, while Alvin Kamara and Kendre Miller are averaging just 3.0 and 2.8 yards per carry, respectively. With Donaldson dealing with an injury, bringing Estime back into the fold could provide a much-needed breath of fresh air for the Saints’ rushing attack.
The decision to release Carlson is another indication that the Saints have yet to find stability at kicker since moving on from Will Lutz. Carlson has struggled throughout the season, costing New Orleans valuable points in several key situations. At this point, it would appear that Charlie Smyth is the leading candidate to take over kicking duties.
With the Saints coming off their bye week and looking to turn things around, these moves could be just the beginning.
What other roster moves do you think the Saints will make, or should make, as they look to improve this team?
