Jonas Urbig is nearing his first anniversary at Bayern Munich. In this time, the former FC Köln goalkeeper has contested multiple Bundesliga, Champions League and DFB Pokal titles. So. Can the 22-year-old be Bayern’s Manuel Neuer heir and be the Bavarians’ future No.1?
Hold on, says head coach Vincent Kompany. Asked about Urbig’s potential to be No.1 ahead of Bayern’s Bundesliga clash against VFL Wolfsburg, Kompany refuses to get ahead of himself: “At the moment, I see the combination of Manu and
Jonas as ideal, also for Jonas’s development,” Kompany said, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “Manu has already helped Jonas a lot. Jonas has also already played some very important games, in the Champions League and the cup. We’ve shown that we have faith in Jonas. How the future will unfold isn’t on my mind right now. The way things are going now is perfect.”
There is no need to rush. Even Neuer only became Bayern’s starting goalkeeper at 24. Urbig will get his time. It is just important for the process to be measured and completed appropriately rather than as quick as possible.
