Week three was the week of close games for the Mountain West. There were some solid performances throughout the week, many of which came from new faces. With that being said, let’s take a look at the top performers from week two.
Offensive Player of the Week
Anthony Colandrea (UNLV)
If the season ended today, the junior quarterback would likely be the offensive player of the year. Colandrea had another solid performance in UNLV’s 30-23 win over UCLA. He finished the game completing 15 of 21 passes for 203 yards and three touchdowns.
He also added another 59 yards on the ground.
Defensive Player of the Week
Giovanni Iovino (Hawaii)
The senior linebacker had a career day against Sam Houston. The play of the game came when Iovino intercepted a tipped pass and returned it for a touchdown. Iovino also added four tackles in the Rainbow Warriors 37-20 win.
Special Teams Player of the Week
Kansei Matsuzawa (Hawaii)
The senior kicker continued his storybook season in Hawaii’s win over Sam Houston. Matsuzawa’s perfect season continued as he connected on all three field goal attempts, including a long of 43 yards.
Newcomer of the Week
Scottre Humphrey (New Mexico)
The Montana State transfer running back had a huge game in the Lobos’ 32-22 victory over Idaho State. Humphrey carried the ball 18 times for 141 yards and added two touchdowns. After struggling against a tough Michigan defense, Humphrey had his best performance as a Lobo.
Freshman of the Week
Sire Gaines (Boise State)
The freshman running back started the game off with a bang, taking his first carry for 46 yards. Gaines fell just short of 100 rushing yards finishing with 98 yards on 14 carries to lead Boise State to a 51-14 victory over Eastern Washington.
