Gentry’s college journey took a unique path.
Originally beginning his career at Arizona State, the Philadelphia native flashed immediately as a true freshman before transferring to USC ahead of the 2022 season.
Over four years with the Trojans, Gentry developed into one of the defense’s most recognizable playmakers. He totaled 271 career tackles, 27 tackles for loss, nine sacks, two interceptions, 13 passes defended and nine forced fumbles during his collegiate career.

Fortunately for both player and team, Cincinnati doesn’t need him to contribute immediately.

The Bengals significantly reshaped their defense this offseason, but linebacker remains one of the more intriguing position battles entering training camp.
Veterans and draft picks are expected to occupy the top spots on the depth chart, meaning Gentry’s clearest path to making the roster will likely come through special teams and showcasing his versatility throughout the preseason. His unique physical profile also opens the door for creative usage.

What to expect
Making the initial 53-man roster won’t be easy for Gentry. The practice squad appears to be the most realistic outcome entering training camp, allowing Gentry to continue developing physically while learning Golden’s defensive system.
That shouldn’t be viewed as a disappointment.
Several productive Bengals contributors have begun their careers in similar fashion, and Gentry’s athletic ceiling may be higher than that of many players selected late in the draft.
If he adds 15 to 20 pounds without sacrificing his movement skills, his long-term outlook becomes even more intriguing. His combination of length, speed and football instincts simply isn’t something teams encounter very often.
Final outlook
Eric Gentry is the definition of a developmental lottery ticket. His floor may be a practice squad linebacker who contributes on special teams. His ceiling, however, is considerably more interesting.
The Bengals have spent the offseason searching for faster, longer and more versatile defenders capable of fitting Al Golden’s evolving scheme. Few players on the roster check those boxes quite like Gentry.
He’ll need time, strength and refinement before becoming a meaningful contributor. But if everything clicks, Cincinnati may have quietly uncovered one of the biggest steals of its entire rookie class.
