The 2026-27 college basketball season became officially official earlier this week on Monday with the first day of practices across the country. The Hoyas took the court inside the Thompson Athletic Center as Ed Cooley begins his fourth season on the Hilltop still in search of his first NCAA Tournament berth at Georgetown.
This has been one of the stranger off-seasons in the sport with temporary restraining orders and court cases dominating much of the news cycle over the last few months. These eligibility
decisions are not all settled to date, which is probably why Georgetown has yet to post a men’s 26-27 roster on the school’s athletic website. (The women’s roster is updated for the current season.)
It’s no secret that both Vince Iwuchukwu and NJ Benson (DePaul) are hoping to receive a fifth season of college basketball. Having both big men available would be a major boost to what is obviously an enormous season for Cooley and Co. in DC. Going the other direction, it’s difficult to imagine excitement for the Hoyas come Selection Sunday if neither are allowed to play. SAVE THE DATE
Georgetown sent out an email earlier today for fans to save the date on Thursday, October 15, 2026 to meet the men’s and women’s basketball teams from 7 to 8pm at McDonough Gymnasium at a Hoyas Fan Fest. Details to follow but this seems like it would be a Midnight Madness-y type of event.
For those able to make the fan fest, they can actually get back-to-back nights with the Hoyas because on Friday Georgetown makes the short trip to the Smith Center to face GW in an exhibition for the second season running. Tickets are still available for as low as $22 in some sections. This matchup seems like it would make for a good regular season contest sooner rather than later.
