The fallout from the first leg between Real Madrid and Benfica has taken another turn — and this time, it ends without consequences for Fede Valverde.
Benfica confirmed that UEFA has rejected the formal complaint they submitted against the Uruguayan midfielder. The Portuguese club had accused Valverde of violent conduct during last week’s Champions League play-off clash, specifically pointing to an incident involving Samuel Dahl late in the match.
In an official statement, Benfica expressed frustration
with the decision, arguing that video footage clearly showed what they considered an act of aggression against their Swedish full-back. From their perspective, the challenge warranted a straight red card and should not have gone unpunished.
The moment in question occurred in the 83rd minute. Play continued without a foul being called, and VAR chose not to intervene. Dissatisfied with how the situation was handled on the pitch, Benfica escalated the matter to UEFA’s Disciplinary Committee in hopes of retroactive action.
UEFA has now reviewed the case and opted not to pursue any disciplinary measures. The decision arrives before the second leg, bringing clarity to the situation and ensuring Valverde remains available.
For Real Madrid, the ruling removes any uncertainty surrounding one of their most important midfield pieces. Valverde’s availability is significant given his versatility and tactical importance in high-intensity European fixtures.
