The UNC women’s lacrosse team is two wins away from repeating as national champions after a 14-11 win over Stanford in the NCAA quarterfinals on Thursday.
In their third game against the unseeded Cardinal this season, the second-seeded Tar Heels never trailed after jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter. Stanford drew within 5-4 just over five minutes into the second quarter, but Carolina outscored it 3-0 the rest of the period. The Cardinal never got the margin below three goals in the second half.
Eight different players scored for UNC, with sophomores Chloe Humphrey and Addison Patillo both recording a hat trick (Humphrey’s first goal was her 100th of the season). The Tar Heels outshot Stanford 29-22, including a 23-13 advantage in shots on goal. They also won the turnover battle 20-14, thanks in large part to junior midfielder Kaleigh Harden, who was credited with seven caused turnovers. The Cardinal’s 20 turnovers were its second-most of the season.
Carolina will face #3 seed Maryland in the NCAA semifinals on May 22 at Northwestern. The game will start at either 3:00 PM ET or 5:30 PM ET and will be broadcast on ESPNU. It will be the first time the former ACC rivals have met since 2020.
