The Chicago Bears signed backup quarterback Tyson Bagent to a two-year contract extension.
The news was first reported by CHGO.
NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo reports it as a $10 million extension worth up to $16 million with incentives.
Bagent joined the Bears as an undrafted free agent out of Shepherd in 2023. He saw action in four games as a rookie, filling in for Justin Fields. He went 2-2 with three touchdowns and six interceptions while completing 65.7 percent of his passes.
Just last week,
both head coach Ben Johnson and general manager Ryan Poles heaped praise on the young signal caller. Johnson said he’s “phenomenal” and says he appreciates “the seriousness and intent that he brings every time he walks into a room.”
Poles called him the hardest worker on the team during the broadcast of the second preseason game on Sunday.
While fans love to speculate on Bagent’s potential as trade bait, this is still a team-friendly deal and ties him to the Bears through the 2027 season. He would’ve been a restricted free agent following 2025.
Top-end backup quarterbacks are highly important. While he lacks experience, his skills, work ethic and buying into the role of a backup make him a vital piece of the roster.
