Tennessee moved to 9-3 on the diamond this afternoon, handling ETSU — a team that beat the Volunteers last season in Knoxville — 7-1.
Two-way player Blaine Brown once again got the midweek start, but didn’t last long on the mound. Brown quickly loaded the bases in the top of the 1st before hitting the exits. ETSU was able to get one home with a sacrifice fly, but Brady Frederick — who played for ETSU last season — got out of it with minimal damage.
Blaine Brown smacked a double into the gap to get
it back. Levi Clark drove in another, then Reese Chapman just missed a home run to drive in a third. Chris Newstrom capped a big inning by driving in a fourth run to give the Volunteers a 4-1 lead.
Frederick would end up going three innings before giving way to Cam Appenzeller. Frederick didn’t give up a hit, while Appenzeller gave up just one and struck out four.
Manny Marin added to the Tennessee lead in the bottom of the 4th to make it 5-1. Henry Ford got in on the action in the bottom of the 6th, hitting a home run to left to extend the Tennessee lead out to 7-1.
That’s all the Volunteers would need. Tennessee cruised from there to secure a 7-1 win. So Tennessee took two of three in Houston and comes back home to pick up their third straight win. That’s a nice way to bounce back from an ugly series against Kent State and a loss to UCLA.
Reese Chapman finished his day 3-for-3. Jay Abernathy, Henry Ford and Chris Newstrom each came away with two hits a piece.
Tennessee will be back in action on Wednesday, set to host Oakland.
