It’s been an interesting couple of weeks for Polish boxer Mariusz Wach, who went from fighting former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury on July 24th to facing six men in a cage this weekend.
The long and winding road towards the much anticipated Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua superfight has taken some unusual detours, and the latest saw Fury face Wach in Thailand on the same weekend that Joshua faced Kristian Prenga in Saudi Arabia.
Joshua vs. Prenga was a warm-up fight for “AJ,” while Fury vs. Wach was a strange
‘keep busy’ match that wasn’t even broadcast live. Instead, the idea was that it would eventually air on Fury’s Netflix reality show ‘At Home With The Furys.’ “The Gyspy King” beat Wach handily, forcing “Wiking” to quit on the stool after the 7th round.
Wach was a legit boxer over a decade ago but is now known for accepting mixed rules fights against multiple opponents. On Saturday August 8th he participated in a bizaare 1 vs. 6 ‘Gypsy Team’ fight at PRIME MMA Summer Fest where he fought 6 men, two at a time. Wach had won similar fights before, but this time ended up getting overwhelmed.
The fight, contested under K-1 rules with MMA gloves, saw Wach’s two opponents team up to push Wach against the cage and batter him until they were too tired to continue. They then tagged in the next two men, who did the same. Wach could do little but try to defend himself for three long rounds before the ref mercifully waved the fight off.
Hopefully Wach was paid well enough to fight Fury that he doesn’t need to keep accepting these kinds of fights. It’s all fun and games until you end up getting pummelled badly by multiple opponents.
