The Arizona GymCats’ big team score last Friday got the squad back on track after a difficult meet the week before. It also got Aubrey Krohnfeldt some attention from the Big 12 coaches. The sophomore was announced as the Big 12 Specialist of the Week on Tuesday.
The award was Krohnfeldt’s first conference honor and the first for Arizona this season. Last year, Elena Deets took the specialist of the week award three times on her way to Big 12 Event Specialist of the Year honors.
Krohnfeldt won the uneven
parallel bars with a 9.900. One of the two judges awarded her a 9.950, finding only the most minimal deduction in the routine. The score was a career high and helped the GymCats reach a season high 49.225 on the event.
The native of Mesa, Ariz. has been a contributor since she stepped foot on campus. On Friday, she helped contribute to a team score of 196.800. It was Arizona’s highest score since the 2024 season. The GymCats bested that score six times that year, including scoring a 197.000 against Stanford in their final season of Pac-12 competition.
The big score helped mitigate the historically low score the GymCats had the week before. The team ended this week ranked 30th. While it’s lower than they’ve become accustomed to in recent years, it’s still a score that would put them in the postseason if it was held today.
Arizona will travel to Provo to take on No. 23 BYU in its first Big 12 meet of the season. Because road scores have taken on an increased importance this season, it will be a major opportunity for the squad to improve their prospects for the postseason. The meet will air on ESPN+ at 7 p.m. MST on Friday, Jan. 30.
