Rutgers football has added another edge rusher in the portal, this time being J’Dan Burnett, who transferred to the Scarlet Knights from Tulsa. He played four years for Louisiana Tech before suiting up with the Golden Hurricanes this past season. He is listed at six feet and 250 pounds and is from Fort Worth, Texas.
Burnett redshirted his freshman season at Louisiana Tech before appearing in all 12 games during his sophomore year, making one start. He was given a medical year in his junior season after
suffering a season-ending leg injury following making three starts, but rebounded in 2024 by appearing in all 12 games and starting three at defensive end. He finished his tenure with the Bulldogs with 54 total tackles, 9.5 tackles for a loss, and five sacks.
Despite making just five starts, Burnett played in all 12 games and played 30 or more snaps in each of them in his one season with Tulsa. Burnett recorded 28 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, a team-high 6.5 sacks, and one forced fumble, while earning All-AAC second team honors in the process. His best game of the year came in Tulsa’s 19-12 victory over Oklahoma State, in which he had five pressures and a sack.
According to ScarletNation, Burnett was also expected to visit Florida State and Iowa, but those visits have since been canceled. Burnett was convinced on his visit to Piscataway earlier in the day and is expected to sign with Rutgers tomorrow before starting classes on Tuesday.
The Scarlet Knights have now added two edge rushers through the transfer portal, with Malachi Davis of Toledo transferring to Rutgers early in the portal window. Burnett is the twelfth portal addition for the Knights, with Rutgers undergoing a complete defensive overhaul after a historically poor 2025 season.
The past transfers on the defensive side of the ball include the cornerback duo of Zahmir Dawud and Bradlee Jones, defensive linemen Rondo Porter and Jaedin Lee, and all-AAC linebacker Ty Morris. On the offensive side, Rutgers has added Boston College transfer quarterback Dylan Lonergan, offensive tackles Everett Small and Isaiah Cook, running back Clay Thevenin, and tight end Kam Anthony.
