Lennart Karl is the new kid on the block at Bayern Munich — literally.
The 17-year-old academy starlet has been thrust into the spotlight and into a squad player role with the senior team after the exits of veterans Leroy Sané, Thomas Müller, and Kingsley Coman. And with a 20-minute cameo in Bayern’s 6-0 Bundesliga opener victory over RB Leipzig on Friday, Karl is showing that he is very much a part of head coach Vincent Kompany’s plans.
“It’s just a lot of fun with the guys,” Karl said in post-match
comments captured by Sky Germany reporter Kerry Hau (via @iMiaSanMia). “I’m learning so much and am very happy that the coach is counting on me. I just want to keep going, lead the way, and lead the team to the league title. It’s Bayern Munich, one of the biggest clubs in the world — I have to work hard for it.”
After subbing on in the 69th minute, Karl enjoyed a couple of decent opportunities on goal while donning the #42 shirt — which must be a familiar sight for Bayern fans after seeing Jamal Musiala, now the #10, wear the same during his meteoric rise.
“I know what Musiala is capable of. He’s a role model for me,” Karl added.
Stay tuned. There is much more to come from this young man.
Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig locked horns for what was anticipated as a clash of titans to raise the curtain for the forthcoming Bundesliga season, but what followed was a massacre of Biblical proportions. Bayern had looked shaky in their last few outings, and Leipzig had a lot to prove after some big changes in the team, which meant that both teams, while possessing some massive talents, had chips on their shoulders and something to strive towards.
Helping us dissect the corpse left in Bayern’s wake is Rayyan (Cyler), returning to the pod after a lengthy hiatus to perform some semblance of autopsy, although it seems this game was far more about the pure joy of watching what happened than picking apart the details of what actually did happen. In this edition, we feature:-
- A run-down of the starting XI and shape of both teams.
- The series of events that led to the defining moments of the game, and patterns from before that re-emerged.
- Some final (giddy) thoughts of what this Bayern team could look like going forward.
- A lot, a lot, a lot, of uncontrollable giddy giggling at the mere thought of this match’s existence (sorry).
