Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund was recently asked about the club’s ongoing links top VfB Stuttgart attacker Nick Woltemade and the perceived lack of depth in the unit these days.
Freund would not delve much into the volatile Woltemade situation, but did offer his thoughts on the roster size and composition.
“There was a lot of debate about deadlines, numbers – but we never commented on that, and we won’t do it now. FC Bayern wasn’t the party that generated this discussion. We’re playing
VfB Stuttgart tomorrow, where the player is under contract. Out of respect, we won’t be going into that before the game,” Freund said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “The quantity [of players in the squad] is lower, but the quality is still high – we still have two weeks before the end of the transfer window, but we’re already well equipped. We wanted to make a few changes. But we also don’t want a too big of a squad; we want to have a good mix. We’ll have a lot of games and need a good, deep squad. But key players like (Jamal) Musiala, (Alphonso) Davies, and (Hiroki) Itō will also be returning from injury.”
Freund’s response was a practical one, but the club will also seek to add a player or two (or maybe three depending on any sales) before the deadline hits. At that point, fans will know exactly what the squad will look like for the first half of the season.

- What to watch for with VfB Stuttgart.
- A look at Bayern Munich’s injury situation.
