Newcastle United are increasingly prioritising a move for a Chelsea forward, and it’s not for the one widely reported.
The main target, contrary to prior reports, would be Liam Delap rather than Nicolas Jackson, the latter of whom will return to London following a loan spell at Bayern Munich this season.
The Magpies are widely expected to sign a new striker to improve a putrid forward line after failing to properly fix the gap left by the departure of Alexander Isak last summer, with both Nick Woltemade
and Yoane Wissa struggling for consistency and likely on the way out of Tyneside as soon as this summer.
According to GiveMeSport’s Ben Jacobs, Newcastle’s preference sides with bringing Delap, not Jackson, to St. James’ Park.
“There is interest in Liam Delap, particularly, I’m told, from Newcastle United, who will add another striker this summer,” Jacobs said. “Nicolas Jackson is going to return, the obligation to buy (for Bayern) was always near impossible, but links with Newcastle or new ones at this stage are wide of the mark.
“If Newcastle are going to raid Chelsea for a striker it would more likely be Delap than Nico Jackson as of now.”
Delap’s situation at Chelsea remains uncertain after having a limited presence—let alone impact—in the Blues’ setup this season. Newcastle, however, see that as a positive and an opportunity to land him as a potential long-term option on the cheap.
“Newcastle are going to be really busy,” Jacobs said. “They will lose a star and they might lose two stars, but that won’t just be about balancing the books.”
Delap has appeared in 26 Premier League games and five Champions League matches this season, entering MD36, scoring just two goals across both competitions and logging a combined 1,199 minutes for an average of barely 38 per game.
