In a game where quarterback Austin Simmons completed just 50% of his passes, the term blowout might not come to mind. But as Mizzou defeated Texas A&M 27-6 on Saturday, the Tigers proved they don’t need an elite passing performance to win in the SEC.
“Every week there’s a way to win, you’ve just gotta find it,” head coach Eli Drinkwitz said postgame.
The No. 14 Tigers improved to 5-1, following up their statement win over Florida with another dominant defensive performance. Mizzou held the Aggies to six
points, its fewest allowed against an SEC opponent since limiting No. 13 Tennessee to seven in 2023.
The victory came down to a familiar football principle: games are won and lost in the trenches.
Despite questions surrounding both lines entering the season, Mizzou’s offensive and defensive fronts have become defining strengths. The offensive line has protected Simmons while paving the way for a rushing attack led by Jamal Roberts. On the other side, the defensive front consistently disrupted Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed, turning the Aggies’ offense into a one-dimensional operation.
Six games into the season, Mizzou quarterbacks have taken just six sacks. Against Texas A&M, Simmons remained upright throughout the game, even as the Tigers faced an aggressive defensive front.
The protection was particularly important given Simmons’ uneven afternoon. He finished 14-for-28 for 147 yards, one touchdown and one interception. His interception came when Texas A&M defensive lineman Daymion Sanford secured a tipped pass, giving the Aggies possession at Mizzou’s 14-yard line.
But the Tigers’ offensive line prevented that mistake from becoming a recurring problem. Simmons had time later in the half to find Cayden Lee for a 32-yard touchdown that gave the Tigers their first lead.
If Mizzou maintains its current pace, it could finish the regular season with its fewest sacks allowed since 2018, when former quarterback Drew Lock was sacked 13 times.
The offensive line’s impact, however, has extended beyond pass protection. Mizzou’s rushing attack has become increasingly difficult to contain, and Roberts continued that trend against the Aggies.
Roberts carried the ball 34 times for 222 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 6.5 yards per carry. His performance marked his second consecutive 200-yard game, making him the second Mizzou running back to accomplish the feat since Damarea Crockett did so across the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
“He just keeps on progressing, and he gets better throughout the course of a game,” Simmons said. “That’s something that I haven’t seen before.”
Roberts’ production was the result of persistence as much as explosiveness. Although his 54-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter provided the game’s defining offensive highlight, Mizzou spent much of the afternoon wearing down Texas A&M through repeated carries.
“In the second half towards the end of the third quarter, I just knew once we kept running at them and just kept hitting them consistently, we knew they were going to give up,” Roberts said.
That approach became particularly effective late in the third quarter. Roberts ripped off 57 yards on eight carries during a drive that ended the third quarter. He then helped finish the job, breaking free for a 54-yard touchdown that extended the Tigers’ lead to 27-6.
The performance continued a season-long trend for Roberts, who entered the game among the SEC’s leading rushers. His ability to turn consistent blocking into sustained production gave Mizzou an offensive identity even when its passing game struggled.
While the offensive line controlled the ground game, Mizzou’s defensive front ensured Texas A&M never established one of its own.
Reed entered the matchup as the Aggies’ primary rushing threat, but the Tigers consistently contained him. He finished with 19 completions on 39 attempts for 187 yards and two interceptions while rushing seven times for -18 yards.
Mizzou’s defensive line helped produce those numbers by generating pressure without relying heavily on blitzes. The Tigers entered the game with a 44.5% no-blitz pressure rate, the fourth-highest mark nationally, and continued to create problems with three-man fronts.
Defensive lineman Donta Simpson recorded 1.5 sacks, while Nic Rodriguez added half a sack of his own. Mizzou finished with three sacks, four tackles for loss and 13 quarterback hurries.
“We got some dudes up front,” Rodriguez said. “They practice their butts off, and it showed up today.”
The pressure disrupted Texas A&M’s timing and limited its ability to sustain drives. The Aggies managed just 216 total yards, including 29 rushing yards, compared to Mizzou’s 399 yards and 252 rushing yards.
Mizzou’s defense held the Aggies to a 6-for-16 mark on third downs, preventing them from building momentum even when the offense struggled to move the ball.
The result was a complete performance from both sides of the trenches. Mizzou protected its quarterback, established the run and consistently pressured Reed.
After a signature win over Florida, the Tigers avoided the letdown that can follow an emotional victory. Instead, they leaned on the physical foundation that has carried them through the first six games.
Simmons did not need to be spectacular. Roberts and the offensive line supplied the ground game, while the defensive front made life difficult for Reed from the opening quarter through the final drive.
The Tigers are winning the physical battles that give them a chance to control games — and their performance against Texas A&M showed just how effective that formula can be.
