The more things change (the Cleveland Browns winning five of their first seven games), the more things stay the same (quarterback stories drawing a ton of interest). This week, as the Browns prepare to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers, QB Dillon Gabriel rejoined the 53-man roster, with the team reportedly planning to keep four quarterbacks, or at least prepared to, for the rest of the season.
With the NFL trade deadline around the corner, GM Andrew Berry could take a number of routes with the team,
including random quarterback-related trade suggestions, but few believe that Shedeur Sanders, Taylen Green, or Gabriel have a lot of value on the market.
While most expected Sanders to remain in his backup role after Gabriel’s activation, Cleveland HC Todd Monken was noncommittal about what he would do behind starter Deshaun Watson:
It is very possible that Monken is just not concerned about the decision, wants to throw the Steelers off his plans, or just doesn’t care to explain his plans to the world. The Browns head coach is also aware enough of what his statements could elicit from fans and media.
In the end, Monken and all of Cleveland’s fanbase just want wins, which Watson is currently helping with. The best-case scenario is that no one ever finds out who the backup quarterback is. That could only happen, however, if the Browns decide to keep three quarterbacks active on Sundays.
For now, we wait to hear from Monken with the final decision between Sanders and Gabriel becoming official 90 minutes before Week 8’s kickoff, when the inactive reports come out.
Who do you think will be the Browns backup QB, and why do you think Monken answered questions the way he did on Wednesday?
