TUCSON, Ariz. — In their first action of the 2026 calendar year, the Iowa State Cyclone men’s golf team picked up a top three finish at the National Invitational Tournament In Tucson, Arizona early this week. The Cyclones were third behind meet champion Texas and runner-up Arizona. Junior Owen Sawyer, a Cedar Falls native, led ISU individually with a top three, third place finish at the meet.
The Texas Longhorns, ranked No. 5, beat Arizona, ranked No. 30, by just one stroke in the team scoring, 278
to 279. BYU was the only other Big 12 school at the meet, tying for fourth with St. Mary’s California with a score of 844. The Cyclones will be back to prepare for their second meet on Monday, February 16. Iowa State will travel to La Quinta, California for the Prestige at PGA West Tournament. It will be the only meet for ISU in February.
Arizona’s Filip Jakubcik was the individual champ at the meet with a score of 14-under, 202 for the tournament. The Longhorns needed a short birdie putt from Tommy Morrison on his final hole to get past the Wildcats in the team race. The win was the second team title for Texas in the 2025-26 season. Monday’s play was scheduled for 36 holes, but was suspended at 7 p.m. central time with the 13-team field through 12 or 13 holes in their respective second round play. Second round play resumed on Tuesday morning and was followed by the final round.
The Cyclones had a pair of top-10 finishers with Sawyer placing third and Paul Beauvy tying for eighth place. After Sawyer’s 205, Beauvy had a score of 208.
Sawyer’s three-round score of 205 was a 54-hole best. Sawyer shot under par for all three rounds and totaled minus-11 for the tournament. He shot under 70 for two of the three rounds. His first round score was 68 for minus-4 followed by a score of 71 for minus-1 in the second round. He shot his best round in round three with a score of 66 for minus-6 under par. His top-10 finish is his tenth of his career. He shot the third-lowest score on par 4 holes at the meet to go with 13 birdies and an eagle.
Beauvy won last year’s tournament. Beauvy shot minus-8 for the tournament with a score of 208. He rebounded after a one-over score of 73 in round one. In round two, he shot a minus-3 score of 69 and followed that with his best round in round three with a 66 score and minus-6 under par. That score of 66 is his lowest score this season. He had 13 birdies and an eagle in the final round, the ninth of his career.
Jackson McCommon placed 14th overall with a score of 210 for the three rounds, good for six-under. McCommon shot even on round one, minus-3 for round two, and minus-3 for round three. McCommon tied his lowest 54-hole score of his career with his three-round total. He had 13 birdies and his fifth career eagle in the third round.
Zachary May tied for 25th with a score of 212 for the three rounds for a score of four-under. May shot minus-4 on round one, 4-over on round two, and minus-3 on round three. May tied for the lowest round of the tournament with his third round score of 65. That score ties the tenth-lowest round score in ISU history. May had 12 birdies and had an eagle on the final round, his eighth of his career.
Dianchao Wu finished 67th with a score of 224 of 8-over par. Wu shot a round one one-over par, and shot five-over for round two. Wu finished with a two-over score for round three. Wu had eight birdies at the tournament
As a team, the Cyclones had the second most eagles and fourth most birdies at the meet with 4 and 59 in the three rounds.
