With the NFL trade deadline looming, all the talk is about your team making a trade for a good player from a bad team in order to help improve their roster. The buzzphrase is that your team is in “win now mode.”
Yes, the Broncos are absolutely taking a big swing at making a run for a Super Bowl.
Yes, it is fun to think about making a trade for a Jonathon Taylor or Saquon Barkley.
Yes, either of these players, or some of the other names thrown around like new Seahawk Quenton Nelson, would look great
in a Broncos uniform.
I’m just curious why anyone is getting their undies in a twist about the Broncos making a trade.
“They need a guard like Quenton Nelson!”
Why? They have a very solid group of linemen that are veterans. Their problem so far this year has more to do with execution, not a lack of ability.
They also have guys like Alex Palczewski and Kage Casey in the wings ready to step in next year if we lose a guard.
And let’s not forget that with Coleman running the ball, the line sure did look pretty decent.
“The one thing the Broncos need is a better running back”
I’m very much not sure on this one. They need a better back than 2026’s version of JK Dobbins. With Jonah Coleman healthy and looking like a stud so far in his one game back, I think they already have an answer. They also get Tyler Badie back somewhere around week 12 or later.
The big problem is the cap space
The Broncos currently have less than $5M in cap space available. Many of these players that people are talking about trading for have contracts far north of that this year, with possible considerable impact on the next couple of years. That’s not to say that the Broncos front office can work some numbers magic to make room, but they are already poised to lose some key players next season like Riley Moss, Ben Powers, and Evan Engram. Bringing in an expensive free agent may not be tenable with a team that is building a long-term winning culture.
