Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) featherweight Godofredo Castro, runner-up on Season 1 of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Brazil, was found dead in a Florida prison on Sunday. “Pepey” was being held
on charges of domestic violence following an altercation with his wife back in June.
“I’m here to bring some terrible news,” UFC veteran and TUF teammate Rony “Jason” Mariano Bezerra said on social media (transcribed by Sherdog). “Unfortunately, we lost our partner, Godfredo Pepey. Unfortunately, he couldn’t handle the pressure and ended up taking his own life, may this serve as an example.”
“Fighters can be very strong physically, but if their mind is unstable, they can end up committing an act like this,” Bezerra continued. “Very sad to lose this great partner, an unparalleled guy. A partner, a friend, a brother. Wherever you are, may God bless you. I love you brother.”
Castro, who was 38 at the time of his passing, amassed a 5-6 record for UFC and was released following back-to-back losses to Shane Burgos (UFC on FOX 25) and Mirsad Bektic (UFC on FOX 27). “Pepey” would compete three more times on the regional circuit, posting a record of 1-1 with one “No Contest.”
