The future of Michael Olise is a hot button topic for Bayern Munich fans these days.
The France international seems set to stay in Bavaria for the majority of his contract, which ends in 2029, but clubs like Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea have all been linked to the attacking star.
Not all of those clubs could potentially lure Olise to them the same way. For Real Madrid, it is tradition and money. For PSG, it is an offer that no one else can match. For Chelsea…wait, what exactly can Chelsea offer?
Jody Morris delivered a blunt assessment of what Chelsea would need to do if it wants any chance of bringing Michael Olise back to the club.
“If you aren’t challenging for league titles, you won’t attract players of Michael Olise’s calibre. Qualifying for the Champions League isn’t enough for the world’s elite, you have to be winning trophies,” Morris told Genting Casino. “Olise won’t look at Chelsea if we aren’t winning leagues. Other English teams with more recent success will have a better chance of signing world-class players. The sooner we return to that level, the better our chances will be of bringing him back to the club, because he is special.”
Morris is certainly qualified to speak about Chelsea. A product of the club’s academy, he made 173 appearances for Chelsea between 1996 and 2003, winning the FA Cup and UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. He later returned to the academy as a coach, winning seven trophies in two seasons with the Under-18s, before becoming Frank Lampard’s assistant with Derby County and Chelsea.
His argument is essentially that Champions League football alone is no longer enough to convince the very best players. And Olise, who is already established as one of the elite young attacking players in Europe, would certainly fit that category.
For Chelsea, the message is clear — if it wants want players like Olise, it needs to become a club that wins titles again.
