Donald recently participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in support of former NFL player Chris Johnson, helping raise awareness for ALS research and encouraging others to get involved. The Ice Bucket Challenge has long served as a powerful fundraising campaign, bringing together athletes, celebrities, and fans to shine a light on the fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Donald’s participation once again demonstrated the leadership and character that defined his playing career just
as much as his dominance between the lines.
Throughout his career, Donald earned a reputation for leading by example. Whether it was his relentless work ethic, commitment to preparation, or willingness to support charitable causes, the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year consistently embraced opportunities to use his platform for good. Taking part in the challenge was another reminder that his influence extends well beyond the football field.
While the charitable aspect of Donald’s video was the obvious focus, Rams fans quickly noticed another interesting detail after he completed the challenge. As is tradition with the Ice Bucket Challenge, Donald nominated three people to participate next. Those names immediately sparked conversation throughout social media.
Donald nominated Myles Garrett, Puka Nacua, and Kobie Turner.
On the surface, the selections make plenty of sense. Garrett is one of the NFL’s premier defensive players and someone Donald has long been compared to because of their dominance as pass rushers. Nacua has quickly become one of the faces of the Rams offense after an outstanding start to his career, while Turner has emerged as one of the franchise’s brightest young defensive stars.
Still, it is difficult to ignore the broader context surrounding those nominations.
Donald could have selected virtually anyone. Former teammates, retired legends, current stars around the league, friends from his playing days, or even athletes outside of football all would have been logical choices. Instead, two of his three nominations were current Rams players, and all three maintain strong connections to the organization that Donald helped define for a decade.
That decision is certain to fuel additional speculation among Rams fans who have already been watching every Donald appearance for signs of a possible NFL return. While there is no concrete indication that Donald is planning a comeback, every interaction with current Rams players seems to generate fresh discussion.
The nominations may ultimately mean nothing more than Donald supporting players he respects and enjoys. That is the most reasonable interpretation. At the same time, fans are always searching for clues, and selecting Puka Nacua and Kobie Turner instead of three random NFL stars inevitably raises eyebrows. It also reflects the camaraderie Donald continues to share with the Rams despite his retirement.
Whether it was intentional or simply coincidence, Donald once again reminded everyone that his connection to Los Angeles remains strong. Until he definitively closes the door on a return, even small gestures like these will continue to be viewed through the lens of possibility, keeping the conversation alive among a fan base that would gladly welcome No. 99 back onto the field.
