The Michigan Wolverines are hard at work behind the scenes as they go through the early stages of strength and conditioning training in preparation for spring football. Practices begin in about a month, which means that recruits — including a top target the he 2027 class — will soon be able to see the new staff coach up their players. That’s where we begin today’s Recruiting Roundup.
Top WR target sets spring visit
It was reported late last week that 2027 four-star wide receiver Quentin Burrell locked in a ton of unofficial visits
this spring. According to Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong ($), he will be at Michigan on April 2, while also seeing a ton of other programs this spring in an effort to narrow down his list of options.
In speaking with On3’s Ethan McDowell ($), the 6-foot-3, 175-pounder from Chicago spoke about needing to familiarize himself with all the new people in place in Ann Arbor.
“Now, I’ve got to figure out who these other people are,” Burrell said. “I’ve got to take a little bit more time and investigate that, see the differences — if it’s better, if it’s worse. I feel like I just have to go see for myself because he could tell me whatever but, at the end of the day, I’ve got to go see it.”
The “he” Burrell is referring to is new wide receivers coach Micah Simon, who visited with Burrell and his family last month prior to the start of the dead period. Burrell called Simon “a cool dude,” but it’s clear he wants to see him in action coaching up his position group to get an idea of what his potential future position coach is like on the field.
Burrell also wants to “see (Michigan) throw the ball a little more” — which is pretty common these days among wideout recruits — as well as “how they conduct practice, how they conduct weight training … the practice style, the meeting style, how the head coach interacts, how the coordinator interacts, how everything trickles down.”
No official visits have been scheduled as of now, but the visits Burrell takes this spring will help him narrow things down even further from the top-10 list he released last week.
New assistant coach offers rising DT
One of the hottest names on the recruiting trail right now is 2027 four-star defensive tackle David Folorunsho. He recently went from the No. 605 player on the composite all the way up to No. 164 after recently being offered by schools like Indiana, Texas, Georgia, Notre Dame, LSU, Penn State, Florida and Miami, to name a few.
New defensive tackles coach Larry Black offered Folorunsho a scholarship when he was at Vanderbilt, and he followed up last Friday with an official offer from Michigan. He spoke about that with Rivals’ Wiltfong ($).
“Me and coach Black have a great relationship, so they are definitely in my top eight,” Folorunsho said. “It’s not too far from home, and coach Black is big on development.”
The 6-foot-4, 280-pounder from Chicago already has official visits lined up for Indiana, Missouri and Purdue, but with a ton of blue blood programs offering him over the last few weeks, including Michigan, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see his visit schedule change a bit at some point.
In-state edge rusher updates recruitment
One of the fastest rising players in the state of Michigan in the 2027 class is four-star edge rusher Myles Smith. The 6-foot-5, 215-pounder from Farmington has quickly gone from an unknown recruit to one of the best at his position in this recruiting cycle. Part of that is because he’s still relatively new to the game of football, so the recruiting services are ranking him based on his athleticism and overall high ceiling.
Because of that, he has earned offers this winter from Penn State, Wisconsin, Cal, Rutgers, Nebraska, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Pitt and more. He already had offers from Michigan and in-state rival MSU, along with other schools like Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Indiana, Illinois and others.
But since the coaching change in Ann Arbor, Smith told On3’s McDowell ($) that he hasn’t heard much from the new staff. They were supposed to visit his school in January before the dead period, but they ended up not being able to make the short trip over. If they connect with him more, Smith said he would “for sure consider” scheduling a visit this spring. He most recently visited for a pair of games this past fall.
“I need to learn about the new coaching staff, everybody who’s coming in and their previous history and what they’ve done,” Smith said.
Smith is ranked No. 4 in Michigan, No. 21 among edge rushers and No. 205 overall on the composite.
