When Lennart Karl went down with a muscle injury that was bad enough to make him miss the World Cup, the alarms went off inside the offices of Säbener Straße per a report from Kicker (as captured by Goal).
Karl, who came back from another injury just a few weeks ago, joined the list of academy products who have picked up injuries in the thigh area, which includes David Santos Daiber, Guido Della Rovere, Maycon Cardozo and Vincent Manuba.
Karl’s injury has spurred Bayern Munich to think about why this
keeps happening. According to the Kicker report, Bayern Munich views these muscle injuries for young, academy players as an “obvious problem” and no longer views the string of setbacks as mere coincidence.
Karl’s injury at the World Cup has made the situation “even more pressing” per Kicker and Bayern Munich is planning an internal review to examine why the injuries are happening and they can help prevent them in the future.
BFW Analysis
Muscle injuries are a part of sports. However, the volume of them occurring with the club’s young players could be something for the Bavarians to explore. On the senior team, there were no shortage of strains or pulls as well, with the calf area being an issue for players like Manuel Neuer and Konrad Laimer, while other players dealt with hamstring, quad, and adductor issues.
An oddity with the Karl injury is not necessarily that he picked it up while shooting, but that he became the second Bayern Munich taken out of the World Cup due an injury sustained while practicing shooting. Serge Gnabry picked up an adductor injury while working on his penalty kicks.
Is there a problem with training methods, stretching regimens, or something else? Bayern Munich is aiming to find out.
