We’ve reached number one, and there’s no question what this game was going to be. In fact, the title of the article is just the score, and the score is enough for every Bears fan to know exactly what game it was.
What went into ranking these games? I think what team they beat matters. I think how they won matters. I believe individual performances within the game matter. Was it dramatic? Did they blow the opponent out? What made the game interesting or compelling from a Bears perspective? All of these factors
went into determining how these games should be ranked.
Let’s talk about Super Bowl XX.
When the Bears met the Patriots in Super Bowl XX, I don’t think there was one person outside the city of Boston who thought the Patriots had a chance. I have to wonder if there was one person in the city of Boston who would actually disagree with that process, but perhaps there were a few delusional ones.
Walter Payton fumbled on the Bears’ opening drive, and although the defense held New England to a 3-and-out, the Patriots were able to knock in a field goal and take a 3-0 lead.
That was the last positive news for the Patriots the rest of the day.
The Bears would sack Patriots QBs seven times in the game. Tony Eason barely made it out of the first quarter before he was pulled (possibly due to fear). Eason was sacked three times and failed to complete a pass on six attempts.
It wasn’t just the pass rush that was dominant; the Patriots’ strong run game got nothing going, gaining 7 yards for the entire game on 11 carries. The defense saved its best performance for the grandest stage. The Patriots were dominated every way possible, and the Bears showed that they truly had no peers and stood on the mountain top all their own.
Check out the highlights below:
The season wasn’t perfect, there was a loss to the Miami Dolphins that still stings, there was the Walter Payton Super Bowl touchdown controversey and of course, we can also talk about how this team failed to win another Super Bowl to put the mid 80s Bears amongst the all-time great teams.
But make no mistake about it, the Chicago Bears, for one single season, were the greatest team the league has ever seen. And with how the rules have changed, we will never see a defense as we saw in Chicago 40 years ago ever again.
