German tabloid Bild are reporting that Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck is now unlikely to renew his contract. The 25 year-old German defender has been linked with Liverpool FC, and with him
about to enter his last year of his contract next summer, Dortmund may just be tempted to sell.
Schlotterbeck is one of the better centre-back options on the market, and with Liverpool also looking at Marc Guehi this past summer, it’s clear that distribution out of the back is an issue the recruitment team is looking at. The issue has only been magnified in recent months, especially with Ibrahima Konaté looking increasingly isolated and targeted by opponents while on the ball.
Anyhow, regardless of fit, Giovanni Leoni’s long-term injury means that the Reds are a centre-back short, and that they just force them into action when the winter transfer window opens in January. Schlotterbeck’s contract situation would probably make for the type of opportunity and bargain that Liverpool tend to go for.
