As it turns out, if Justin Fields wasn’t promised the starting quarterback job when signing with the NY Jets, it may have been Tyrod Taylor who would have been the team’s starting quarterback entering the 2025 season. And, according to a report from SNY’s Connor Hughes, multiple players have voiced that sentiment to the media.
“Several within the locker room have told SNY, at varying points beginning in training camp, they believe Taylor is their best quarterback,” wrote Hughes on X (formerly Twitter).
There are truths in the NFL. Among them: You can’t fool players. They put their trust in their coaches putting them in the best position to win. A death knell: When they question if that’s happening.

Obviously, this is an issue for a number of reasons. The first being that Aaron Glenn can not continue to trot out an underperforming Fields when there’s a growing sentiment amongst the players that Taylor could put the team in better positions to win. If the losses continue to stack, that noise from the locker room will only grow louder.
The second issue is that these leaks were not supposed to happen under Glenn’s regime. Furthermore, it indicates the potential for a larger media frenzy; one that may cost Glenn his job if he’s unable to pull the Jets up from the crevice they find themselves in.
There are already rumblings occurring that Glenn could find himself in the same position as former New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo. That is, a one-and-done tenure as head coach.
Woody Johnson is usually a patient man. However, stranger things have happened in the NFL. Yet so far, it seems the owner may show patience in the first-time head coach.
At his press conference on Monday, Glenn spoke about the relationship between himself and the NY Jets owner. He also broke down part of the conversation they had after the team’s most recent loss.
“Me and Woody have had really good conversations and he understands everything we’re trying to do,” said Glenn. “Obviously, everyone wants to make sure they have a winning record, but here’s the thing that wasn’t heard from the very beginning. We’re not talking about [the] Super Bowl, we’re trying to build a foundation, making sure we win consistently.”
While the words have merit behind them, the playing on the field has none. And, in the NFL, that’s what matters to owners, players, and fans. If Glenn is unable to make adjustments, including a potential benching of Fields, that stubbornness could cost him his job in New York.
