Watched a couple documentaries that came out recently on Netflix this weekend, including the one about the French team at the 2010 World Cup and the one about Jamie Vardy. Both quite good; the latter excellent, even.
I vaguely remember the 2010 scandal for the French, who ended up going briefly on strike at the World Cup after (then-Chelsea striker) Nicolas Anelka was sent home for supposedly insulting the head coach, Raymond Domenech. There are interviews with Domenech himself, team captains Patrice
Evra and William Gallas, plus a few others, and a bunch of journalists and media people as well. Unfortunately, Nico himself did not participate.
I’m not sure how new any of the information revealed in the documentary may be, but it’s certainly presented with great dramatics (perhaps a bit too much). Hard to believe how bad France were at that World Cup and the preceding Euros, too.
So that one was good, but not nearly as good as the Vardy one, which is part of Netflix’s “Untold” sport documentary series — and thankfully available in the US as well. (There are a couple more coming in this current series, including one on Vinnie Jones.)
Vardy’s story is remarkable, and as we know, he’s quite the character. Highly recommended!
