This is a great off-season topic especially since we are in the actual dog days of Nebraska sports off-season. I know there are still sports competing, like Track & Field but with softball and baseball ending their seasons on the same day I think we will be stretching to find topics until football and volleyball start up again.
So below is the video in which they asked members of the Hurrdat staff to answer the question of “Where does Western Nebraska actully start?”
Of course they start with Ravi
Lulla who throws out a ridiculous answer that it’s the Pump and Pantry at the Gretna Outlet Mall. You can see the rest of the answers below, but I do want to make a few comments about some of the answers given.
For a bit of context of my viewpoint: I went to college in Lincoln (Nebraska Wesleyan). Graduated from law school in Omaha. I grew up and I currently live right between Lincoln and Omaha.
First, with Ravi’s answer about the Pump and Pantry. That would mean that Lincoln as well as the football stadium where Nebraska football plays their home games and the University that our state almost revolves around is in “Western Nebraska.” That is clearly erroneous (on all counts).
Second, the airplane on the interstate and Ashland. I assume he is talking about the Strategic Air Command and Space Museum. Again, 25 minutes west of SAC is still Lincoln and the home of Nebraska football and one of the largest economic engines in the state.
Third, anything west of Lincoln. This is where the acceptable answers actually start. This would not be my answer but I find it acceptable. However, I have been to many schools and towns north and south of the interstate, on the east side of the state, as well as well as schools west of Lincoln and the communities are generally comparable.
I have a hard time calling Milford – “Western Nebraska.”
Fourth, anything west of Kearney. Ok. This might be where I land but I do not think it is perfect. But we do have to put the line somewhere. I think maybe you could make an argument for “anything west of Grand Island” but I think the argument that Kearney is a lot bigger than people realize is correct.
Lastly, the time-zone change. I could see this being a good and easily definable line for Western Nebraska. It is clearly on the western side of the state but it is so far west that I think you would need a Central Nebraska designation as well. Since that is not in the cards in this debate, this answer fails.
So it is either anything west of Lincoln or anything west of Kearney.
Thoughts?
