In a recent press conference with the German national football team, Jürgen Klopp mentioned the importance of Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich in the center of the pitch and that he never intended to play the 31-year-old at his old position at right-back.
“I expect top performances. Of course, a player with his experience, at his age, has to lead the way. But we have to adapt to a new way of playing football,” Klopp said (as captured bt X account @iMiaSanMia). “There are tactical aspects to consider,
including how we will work without the ball. I have no doubt that he will fulfill his potential with us. And yes, we see him as a midfielder. We never had a conversation in which we talked about him as a right-back.”
In recent years, Kimmich was used as a right-back by former German national team coach Julian Nagelsmann out of necessity due to the lack of right-backs in the German talent pool. With prospective fullbacks/wingbacks ready to show what they’re made of, the former RB Leipzig midfielder will play almost exclusively at his current and preferred position.
