Maryland wrestling had an impressive showing at the Southeast Open Sunday, with five wrestlers earning a spot on the podium. Branson John and Mateo Vinciguerra each won their respective brackets.
An All-American last season, John picked back up where he left off. The junior defeated Chattanooga’s Kendrick Curtis, Ohio’s Evan Wingrove, West Virginia’s Coen Grimm and North Carolina’s Michael Calcagno en route to his 197 weight class title.
Vinciguerra’s collegiate debut was equally impressive. He won the freshman/sophomore 285 weight class after pinning his first two opponents. Vinciguerra narrowly defeated Kai Calcutt and Everest Ouellette from NC State in the semifinal and final.
Senior Nicolar Rivera finished second in the 125 weight class, while sophomore Ryan Kennedy and Jackson Butler each earned third place.
