San Francisco 49ers starting quarterback Brock Purdy was potentially set to back up Mac Jones today. Reports of Purdy getting closer resurfaced on Sunday morning. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo spoke about
Purdy’s near future:
He’s getting closer. I know you’ve heard that repeatedly. Well, they’re looking at the potential for him to return in Week 11. But for now, it is Mac Jones once again for the 49ers. The way that the 49ers have handled Purdy is that they want to make sure he doesn’t suffer another setback here. He’s their franchise quarterback.
They’ve made it clear. As well as Mac Jones has played, when Purdy is healthy, he is back under center as their quarterback. He already had one setback. They don’t want another one. So that’s why they’ve taken a slow approach on this one.
We’ll see about Purdy coming up. He still has to make a little bit of progress. But the hope is that he’s back in the near future, next week.
Purdy is officially inactive today. Here is the inactive list against the Los Angeles Rams:
QB Brock Purdy
DT Alfred Collins
WR Ricky Pearsall
RB Jordan James
OL Connor Colby
DT Sebastian Valdez
S Marques Sigle
What a fall for Sigle, who doesn’t play special teams. And since he’s not in the starting lineup, the 49ers won’t use a roster spot on a player who won’t contribute.
The bigger inactive that’s a rookie is Collins, who, in a literal sense, single-handedly won the game for the 49ers in Week 5 by forcing a fumble at the goal line.
No Valdez might seem a bit strange after the team elevated him on Saturday. With Keion White, Kalia Davis, Kevin Givens, Jordan Elliott, and CJ West — who had previously been a healthy scratch– the playing time for Valdez wasn’t feasible.
If you remember back during training camp, it was West who was the flashy rookie making plays, and even ahead of Collins on the depth chart.
Ben Bartch and Spencer Burford are active, meaning Colby doesn’t need to play. We will see who starts between Bartch and Burford.
