The Rutgers baseball season has officially come to a close, with the Scarlet Knights’ 3-2 loss to Ohio State on Wednesday ensuring their exit from the Big Ten tournament. This year, the Big Ten tournament implemented a double-elimination rule for the first round of the Big Ten tournament, meaning that teams would have to lose twice to get officially eliminated. Rutgers first loss of the tournament came against Michigan on Tuesday, where they lost 10-0 after 7 innings in run-rule fashion.
The Knights’
game against Ohio State was much more competitive, with the Buckeyes drawing first blood in the bottom of the fourth inning before Ryan Jaros and Yomar Carreras registered RBI’s in the top of the sixth to give Rutgers the lead.
Ohio State would tie it up in the bottom of the sixth before Dane Harvey hit a double for the Buckeyes in the 8th inning to take the lead for good. Rutgers did get two runners on base in the ninth inning, but they ended up getting stranded as Ohio State held on to win.
Rutgers did get some solid performances on the mound this game, with starter Zack Konstantinovsky pitching 5.2 innings on short rest and only allowing two runs on three hits with six strikeouts. This brings his season total to 83 to tie for sixth-most strikeouts in a season in program history. Joe Mazza finished off the game for RU, pitching 2.2 innings of relief and allowing just one run on five hits with three strikeouts and no walks, but could not get the out that he needed to keep the Knights in the game.
Now the attention turns to the offseason and the transfer portal for Rutgers baseball.
