The Jets need a long-term answer quarterback. Fernando Mendoza is not a plausible option. The top quarterback prospect in this year’s NFL Draft is a lock to go number one overall to the Las Vegas Raiders.
To the extent there is a consensus choice for the number two quarterback, it is Alabama’s Ty Simpson.
Simpson is unlikely to be an option for the Jets with the second overall pick, but he could be in play at pick 16 or maybe even 33.
Do Jets fans want the team to pick Simpson? If our latest SB Nation
Reacts survey is any sort of indication, the answer is no.
I too would have reservations about the Jets picking Simpson.
While the Jets do need a long-term answer at quarterback, simply picking a quarterback does not necessarily provide that. It’s important to pick the right quarterback.
Simpson lacks experience. He started only 15 games in college. That means he likely will need a fair amount of development and potentially need to sit his first year. While the Jets do have Geno Smith locked in as their Week 1 starter, I think it’s fair to wonder whether Smith will play well enough all season long to keep Simpson on the bench. More to the point, the Jets don’t have an ideal infrastructure in place to bring along a quarterback like Simpson at this point.
The team also has three first round picks in 2027, which will give them a good shot at getting a quarterback,
I think I’m with the majority on this one.
