We have officially entered “injury report watch” territory. It has been 44 days since Jalen Green went down with that hamstring strain during the first quarter against the Los Angeles Clippers. According to the original reporting from Shams Charania, the timeframe for Green to be reevaluated was 4 to 6 weeks. That was 6 weeks and 2 days ago.
You should
set your notifications to ‘on’. This could be the week we see Green return to the court. And honestly? The Suns need him right now.
The Phoenix Suns have been a team rooted in persistence. This team has built an identity on raw, unwavering energy. They want to be the T-100 Terminator. They want to be a relentless machine that never stops coming for you. Every opponent is Sarah Connor. But the challenge becomes the fact that it takes a toll on the nervous system. It creates a deep and heavy fatigue.
The team is 4-6 in their last 10 games. They are sputtering. Over that time span, they’re 27th in the NBA in three-point shooting (32.6%), 26th in scoring (109.2), 19th in defensive rating (115.9), and 27th in net rating (-6.1). Yes, the competition has been fierce. But they are being pushed to the limits of their rotation and ability to stay locked in quarter after quarter.
There are eight rotation players currently putting up career high scoring numbers. I have to wonder if that is sustainable.
I think about rookies in the NFL. Those kids have all the talent in the world, but their marrow has not been tested by the grind of a professional schedule. A college star might play 17 games on the way to a National Championship, but an average season is 13 games. Their bodies are not ready for the long haul or the madness of the NFL postseason.
We are seeing the same thing with several players in Phoenix.
These guys have never seen usage rates this high. They have never carried this much scoring responsibility. This team has shown they can pester and frustrate an opponent into a state of total madness. The only question left in this long season is how long they can keep the engine running before the wheels fly off.
The pending return of Jalen Green is a vital piece of this twisted puzzle. If you have watched this team all season, you know something feels wrong. They are slowing down. There are quarters where the effort is present, but the execution is not. They need a spark. They need a fresh infusion of talent. They need a man who has been sitting on the bench watching this season unfold and who is starving to get out there.
The Suns need Jalen Green.
His return aligns with a stretch of the season where they desperately need another log on the fire. When he returns, it will reset the roles on this roster. Collin Gillespie likely will not see as many minutes. Jordan Goodwin will see a reduction too. Their confidence is high because of the experience they gained in this system. Their ability to execute is apparent. But opposing teams have had time to build a game plan against them. They have identified weaknesses on film and pushed these players away from their comfortable spots.
The infusion of Jalen Green will reset those expectations. He will force opponents to wonder what Phoenix will do next.
So now, we wait, although hopefully not long. Head coach Jordan Ott did say an update would be coming shortly.
