Die Folgen: Germany’s 4-3 win over Switzerland (Bavarian Football Works)
German rolled into Switzerland looking to establish some momentum for its World Cup run and it might have actually helped build more doubt than confidence despite a 4-3 victory.
Switzerland is no pushover, but Germany did not do much to establish itself as a potential favorite for the upcoming World Cup.
Simply put, it just looked like more of the same. Let’s get into it, here are some quick hitters on the match:
- As always, let’s begin with a look at Julian Nagelsmann’s starting XI:
- Nagelsmann’s lineup offered few surprises. Leroy Sané is being given a chance, but it does feel like many fans are skeptical of his ability to stay “up” during the travails of a tournament.
- In the 6th minute, Kimmich hammered Dan Ndoye with an attempted pass that slammed Ndoye’s noggin.
- Switzerland boss Murat Yakin looks like Niko Kovač, if Kovač was an international spy with a penchant for hard drinks and fast women (or maybe hard women and fast drinks?). Either way, it is a solid look.
- Schlotterbeck is really developing into a fine, No.1-type center-back, but he still makes some unnecessary mistakes.
- Germany took control of the match very early.
- Havertz almost scored in the 13th minute, but his sliding attempt was right at Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.
- Gnabry had a good look minutes later, but his volley attempt hit traffic on its way to the net.
- Ndoye got his revenge for Kimmich’s misplaced pass by scoring against an extremely lackadaisical effort from the German defense. Kimmich and Tah, in particular, left a lot to be desired on the play.
- Just like that, all of the worst fears about Nagelsmann came right back to the forefront for Germany fans.
- The German were too rigid offensively and did not show enough creativity, but would get a reprieve. Tah would head home a cross from Florian Wirtz after a quick corner. Germany needed that in the worst way.
- Havertz ripped off a good shot in the 32nd minute, but Kobel saved it. Havertz would put another shot over the crossbar in the 36th minute.
- Sané and Gnabry just did not look comfortable at all out there for Germany. Leon Goretzka was not much better.
- Breel Embolo would get the better of Tah on a run to the net net laid out to put his head on a cross from Silvan Widmer to make it 2-1 in favor of the Swiss in the 41st minute. The play started with a bad pass by Schlotterbeck.
- Just a minute later, some sloppy play from the Germans led to another break for Switzerland, which led to Fabian Rieder’s rocket clanging off the crossbar. Yup, it seemed like Germany was in shambles to end the half, but…
- Gnabry, after a dismal half, had a fantastic finish off of a great pass from Wirtz. What a freaking play!
- If you have not seen the pass from Wirtz, you need to.
- In the 61st minute, Wirtz unleashed an incredible shot from a short corner that dipped in right under the crossbar at the far post. Wirtz…simply incredible!
- Bayern Munich phenom Lennart Karl would make his debut in the 63rd minute.
- At that point, Germany just had to settle in and protect its lead…and basically to avoid doing anything stupid.
- Right?
- Right?
- Switzerland’s Miro Muheim sent a pass into traffic toward Joël Monteiro, who gathered it in and took advantage of some horrendous defending from Goretzka and Tah to unleash an absolute cracker to knot the game at 3-3.
- Germany could not avoid doing something dumb.
- In the 85th, minute, though, Wirtz would bail out Germany once again with another goal on a perfectly placed shot! The play started with a great track back to win a ball by Tah before eventually getting to Karl, who used his dribbling to breakdown the Switzerland defense. From there, the ball would eventually get to Pascal Groß, who just tapped a pass to Wirtz to set up the goal. Wirtz was sensational.
- Overall, it was a game filled with some great individual moments, but clearly not up to the standard that fans would expect for the World Cup. It is great that Germany won and that fans were treated to a spectacular showing from Wirtz, but it does have to be much better moving forward.
