Maya World’s Cinderella Story was missing a happy ending… until AEW Redemption, a PPV happening on her 24th birthday!
At July 26’s event in Montreal, World was facing Hikaru Shida for the TBS title. The match was, as the headline says, not-great. In the opinion of this writer, most of the blame for that falls on champion Shida, who seems to be a shell of the wrestler who helped carry the AEW women’s division through the first-half of the company’s existence*. The match tonight also got more time than
seemed was necessary for the story it told, and was failed to continuously engage the Bell Centre crowd.
Story-wise it was okay, giving Maya an injury to persevere through. The champion was vicious, and refused to take a win so she could torment the younger woman who last month made the Owen Hart Cup final just weeks after the tragic death of her brother.
Shida wanted to beat up World so badly she got into it with referee Paul Turner to do it some more…
That eventually cost her the belt:
