Veteran cornerback Greg Newsome II has signed a three-year, $46 million contract extension ($32 million guaranteed), according to a report from NFL insider Jordan Schultz.
Newsome, a 2021 first-round pick by the Cleveland Browns, signed a one-year, $7 million contract with the Giants during the offseason. A three-year extension would run through 2029, with guaranteed money likely over the first two seasons.
Newsome had three good seasons with Cleveland to start his career. His play declined in 2024,
though, and when that continued into 2025 the Browns dealt him to the Jacksonville Jaguars midseason.
The 26-year-old was hoping for a resurgence in a defense suited to his skillset when he joined the Giants.
“I feel like this is an opportunity for me to be here long-term,” Newsome said shortly after signing with the Giants. “There [were] other places that could have had a little bit longer-term deal, but I wanted to be here, and I wanted to showcase myself in front of the New York fan base and my coaches and players. I’m excited to start fresh here now and hopefully we get something done where I can retire a Giant, because that’s what I want to do.]
“With my game, my strong suit I think is playing press man coverage,” Newsome said. “That was something that we did in Cleveland all the time was playing man-to-man, getting in people’s face and challenging guys. So that’s where I feel like my strong suit is. Improvement, I feel like all of my game can improve. If you’re not trying to improve on everything, then you’re not trying to be a great player. I think just improving on all – press, everything, I feel like there’s always something that I can get better at.”
Newsome has, indeed, had a resurgent season. He earned a starting job, and his 62.0 passer rating against is the best of his career. So, too, is his reception percentage allowed of 57.7.
Newsome is ranked 18th of 106 qualifying cornerbacks by Pro Football and Sports Network with an Impact Score of 82.6. That would be a career-best if it holds for the entire season.
Now that a deal with Newsome is done, might the Giants also try to get an extension completed with Deonte Banks?
