The 2026 FIFA World Cup has delivered everything fans could have hoped for: drama, upsets, breakout stars, and a few stunning disappointments. While powerhouses like Spain, Argentina, France, and England ultimately reached the semifinals, the road there was filled with performances that nobody saw coming.
That brings us to today’s Question of the Day:
Which World Cup team surprised you the most, and which team was the biggest disappointment?
There are plenty of worthy candidates on both sides of the
debate.
For the biggest surprise, Norway deserves serious consideration. Many expected them to be a dangerous dark horse, but few predicted a run to the quarterfinals that included a memorable victory over Brazil in the Round of 16. Their disciplined defending, clinical finishing, and fearless approach made them one of the tournament’s feel-good stories.
Morocco once again proved that its 2022 World Cup success was no fluke. Another deep run, highlighted by victories over the Netherlands and Canada before falling to France, reinforced the nation’s status as one of international football’s rising powers. Paraguay also turned heads by eliminating Germany on penalties, one of the tournament’s biggest knockout-stage shocks.
On the other hand, several traditional powers failed to meet expectations.
Germany will undoubtedly be mentioned by many fans. Despite entering the tournament with high hopes, Julian Nagelsmann’s side was knocked out in the Round of 32 after a penalty shootout loss to Paraguay. With the talent available, many expected a much deeper run.
Brazil is another team that could top the disappointment list. Although they advanced through the first knockout round, their campaign ended earlier than expected with a defeat to Norway in the Round of 16. For a nation that enters every World Cup expecting to compete for the trophy, that exit will sting for a long time.
Portugal also had reasons to feel frustrated. A talented squad featuring elite players was unable to get past Spain in the Round of 16, once again leaving supporters wondering whether this generation could have achieved more on the biggest stage.
Of course, every fan values different things. Some focus on results, while others judge teams based on style of play, expectations, or how much talent was left unfulfilled.
So, what do you think?
Which team exceeded your expectations the most? Which team let you down the most? Let us know your picks and explain why.
