The Seattle Seahawks have just made a major investment in their offensive line, and they’ve swung big at the trade deadline once again.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Seahawks have agreed to send a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-rounder to the Indianapolis Colts for perennial All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson.
The 30-year-old
Nelson is on an expiring contract, so not unlike the Leonard Wiliams trade a few years ago, or the Rashid Shaheed trade last season, John Schneider is using Day 2 and Day 3 draft capital to land a major trade deadline name. We can worry about Nelson’s contract at another time, because the now is that Seattle has upgraded at guard in a humongous deal.
Nelson has spent his entire career as an elite pass protector and run blocker at left guard, so this could possibly result in Grey Zabel moving to right guard while Nelson slots in at his most comfortable position. Zabel can play on either side and just hasn’t had the need to switch yet. What this means for starting right guard Anthony Bradford remains to be seen, but by default someone is about to lose their starting job at guard.
With the Indianapolis Colts headed for a rebuild, firing general manager Chris Ballard midseason and promoting former Seahawks executive Ed Dodds to interim GM, there’s a natural connection between Schneider and Dodds. This is exactly the type of move that could elevate the Seahawks offense both in the pass and run game.
